Behind the Bench: Cam Thompson

The infrastructure that makes verified nutrition data possible isn't just scientific. It's also built in code. In this edition of Behind the Bench, we meet Cam Thompson, Senior Staff Software Engineer, one of the people responsible for translating the complexity of food science and regulatory frameworks into systems that actually work.

Cam describes his Edacious superpower simply: he's stubborn. And in his words, that's exactly what the work demands. Building software at the intersection of nutrition science and regulatory compliance isn't clean or linear. It requires pushing through ambiguity, holding standards even when the path gets complicated, and refusing to settle for systems that almost work.

When asked to describe what Edacious does in five words or less, Cam puts it plainly: "Help people eat better food." It's a grounded answer for a deeply technical role; a reminder that every line of code Cam writes is ultimately in service of something real. The platform that stores, structures, and surfaces verified nutrition data exists so that the people on the other side of it can make better decisions about what they grow, make, and eat.

Outside of work, Cam brings the same energy to a pretty different set of pursuits. He's a cyclist and soccer player, a video game enthusiast, and the owner of two miniature dachshunds who presumably hold strong opinions about everything and whom we love to see show up in AI-generated scenarios as Cam’s virtual backgrounds.

That balance also shows up in how Cam approaches his workday. In an era where AI tools are reshaping almost every professional workflow, Cam still plans his schedule and task list by hand — pen and paper. For him, the act of writing things down creates the kind of clarity and intentionality that no digital system has quite replicated. In a company built on the value of verified, precise information, it's fitting that one of the engineers trusts his own analog method most.

Good systems work because someone cared enough to build them right. That's what Cam brings to Edacious every day, and we are grateful for it.

Behind the Bench is a series spotlighting the Edacious team members whose work underpins how food quality is measured, interpreted, and communicated. It highlights the care, collaboration, and rigor behind the data long before insights reach the outside world.

At Edacious, "the bench" represents more than a physical space. It's where science, data, and people come together. This series focuses on the individuals behind that work. Those whose expertise and care shape how food quality is understood, trusted, and acted upon.
