Introducing Edacious FoodData: A New Way to See What's Really in Your Food

Most of us assume food is uniform, that an apple is an apple. In reality, nutritional content varies dramatically from sample to sample. The FDA even permits a 20% margin of error on Nutrition Facts labels to account for natural agricultural fluctuations.

Today, we take a real step toward making that variability visible. Edacious FoodData is now live.

Edacious FoodData combines USDA data with independent lab testing

Edacious FoodData is a public platform that brings USDA data and independently verified nutrition and safety data together in one place, one food record built from two trusted sources, for the first time.

Our Foods data is a superset of the USDA's own FoodData Central database: we start with the USDA's baseline and layer our own primary lab testing on top, adding breadth and depth to what's already there. Our Products and Brands data comes directly from brands and producers who've chosen to test with us and publish their results, on their own terms.

Together, these two layers show category-level reality and individual brand proof, side by side, in the same place.

Why nutritional variability in food matters

When we treat food as a uniform commodity, we erase the incentive to grow or produce higher-quality food, and we risk ignoring real, systemic declines in nutrient density over time. Most people outside farming and food manufacturing have never had a reason to question the assumption that an apple is an apple, a chicken breast is a chicken breast. The data says otherwise, and until now, that variability has mostly stayed hidden inside labs and spreadsheets rather than in front of the people making decisions based on it.

At the same time, food transparency is becoming an expectation, not a nice-to-have. Buyers, retailers, researchers, and everyday shoppers increasingly want to see the proof behind what they choose, not because trust has broken down, but because the tools to provide that proof now exist. We built Edacious FoodData because we believe that trust in food should be something you can verify, not just something you're asked to accept at face value.

How Edacious FoodData organizes food, brand, and certification data

Edacious FoodData is multifaceted, with each section serving a different purpose. For a retailer, researcher, or shopper, that structure means you can start wherever makes sense: browse a food type to better understand the true variability in that food, explore a brand to see their full story, go straight to a single product's results, or search a certification to see the data beyond the label.

However you get there, what you find is real, verified data, not a claim asking to be believed.

Food pages show the combined USDA and Edacious dataset for a given food type, the category-level picture, including the real variability across samples that most people never see.

Product pages show the verified results for a single tested item, the actual numbers behind one specific product, not a summary or an average.

Brand pages bring a company's full portfolio together in one place: their story, their certifications, and every product they've published, so buyers and consumers don't have to piece a brand's credibility together one item at a time.

Certification pages group every product that holds a given third-party certification, like Regenerative Organic Certified or USDA Organic, in one destination, backed by the verified data behind each one. Note: Producers and brands self-report the certifications held by a product. We will continue to build the list of certifications and add attributions represented across Edacious FoodData over time.

Every brand and product listed made a choice most still won't make. They had their food independently tested, and they made those results public. For decades, the only public record of what's in our food came from one source: USDA reference data. While it is the standard and generally trusted, it's a poor average. It can't say anything about any one brand's actual product. The names on this platform decided that wasn't good enough for their customers and did something about it.

What Edacious FoodData enables for consumers, brands, and the food system

By making variability and verification visible in one place, Edacious FoodData enables a few things that weren't possible before:

  • For the public: a way to explore real nutritional variability across foods, grounded in both the USDA's data and our own accredited lab testing, rather than treating any single number as the whole story.
  • For brands and producers: a public home for verified data, one that turns lab results into something buyers, retailers, and consumers can actually see and trust. Within the platform, our customers also gain an expanded view of their own results set against a much larger dataset, revealing where their product sits within the true variability of its category, not just against a single average.
  • For the food system more broadly: a step toward a market where quality claims can be checked and where the brands willing to be tested and verified have a place to show it.

This is a starting point, not a finished picture. We plan to keep adding features, integrating additional datasets, and expanding what's possible here as the platform grows.
